ABSTRACT

In this talk, I will give an overview of research driven by the vision that human knowledge can be grounded in a small number of prototypical components that can be extended through composition and analogy. While these ideas have been embodied in a software prototype system, the focus of the current talk will be to abstract away from the specifics and describe the core ideas in a manner that they could be transferred and applied in different contexts. We can formalize a prototype as a graph-structured existential rule giving us a representation language that is more expressive than popular description logics. Composition can be viewed as inheritance reasoning in which the knowledge is under-specified in the sense that either the equality statements or the cardinality constraints are omitted. Analogical reasoning can be reduced to a set-theoretic computation on locally defined concept descriptions. I will conclude by reflecting on the success of these methods in the context of a large scale experimental project and speculating on future directions.
