VCLA is proud to be a partner of the Vienna Ball of Sciences, which took place on January 31, 2015.
The Ball Magazine of 2015 features an article “Glück oder Verstand“ (page 36) written by prof. Helmut Veith (1971-2016), as well as profiles of computer scientists, gathered around the VCLA and the FWF funded doctoral college LogiCS such as among others Agata Ciabattoni and Georg Gottlob.
Abstract of the article Luck or Logic?
Roulette, in spite of purported strategies for winning, remains firmly in the domain of luck and emotion, computing tools at best a form of moral support. But computer programmes can play—
and easily win—other games, like chess and backgammon, which require logic and strategic thinking. Modern mathematical logic, game theory and »intelligent« computer programmes are built on the work of Kurt Gödel and Oscar Morgenster n at the University of Vienna in the 1930s.
